Ciel packages images of fish products inside styrofoam boxes (acquired from the fish market itself) and cling film to comment on our packaged realities of contemporary society and how we have altered the meaning of things.
Styrofoam boxes were coated in liquid emulsion to create photo-sculptures. This reflects the history of Billingsgate market, and the ‘memory’ of the material itself.
The artwork encourages us to consider the embodiment of images through the containment of time, space and memory.
Downtown Eastside -2014-2015
Downtown Eastside, Vancouver, Canada has been associated with some of the worst: Drug abuse, homelessness and prostitution is a daily way of life in this area. But this community has their unique culture of surviving the toughest and to find humanity in the impossible places. Servants Vancouver is a bi-vocational Christian community in DTES that practises 'radical hospitality'. Ciel worked with Servants Vancouver to tell the story of the individuals of this community, and to let their images shed light on the identities of DTES.
Un-named Series -2011-2012
This is a series of images made around 2011, when Ciel was experimenting with different ways to create visual images. Besides photographing with camera, some of the images are made by placing objects directly on scanner. The bokeh-like effect confuses these images with large format photography. Yet there is an uncanny feeling in the proximity of the focus and the objects' contact with the glass/lens.
